Creating Light in the Darkness

From an early age, Ruben Dario understood the impact of sacrifice and access to education. Raised in Venezuela by a single mother who worked cleaning houses and cooking for others to ensure her children could attend school, he experienced firsthand the challenges faced by families with limited resources.

A formative childhood moment, when he was unable to receive a Christmas gift during a community distribution, inspired his long-term commitment to serving underserved children in his hometown. After relocating to the United States in 2015, Ruben began purchasing and collecting toys throughout the year. By December, he had gathered more than 120 toys, which he personally delivered to children in Venezuela. This initiative became the foundation of Creating Light in the Darkness.

Since its inception, the foundation has expanded its impact. During the pandemic, when many families were forced to choose between food and educational supplies, Ruben mobilized personal resources and community support to assemble and distribute over 400 school supply kits. He also launched youth sports initiatives in basketball, baseball, and soccer, providing equipment to promote structure, discipline, and positive after-school engagement.

Ruben believes education and mentorship are critical tools for long-term social change. Through his work, he aims to create opportunity, stability, and hope for children facing economic hardship.
